New Bromley co-operative store seeks charity partner

As a new co-operative retail store in Bromley is preparing to open its doors to the public, an appeal is being made for a new charity partner.

The new retail store at 1 Homesdale Road will be opened by Southern Co-op – a co-operative society owned by its members and formed in the south of England almost 150 years ago.

The Bromley store is due to open on Wednesday 6 March and Southern Co-op is now looking for a local charity partner that the store can offer fundraising support to over a 12 month period.

The new store will be open daily between 6am to 11pm with a team of 22 colleagues which Southern Co-op is currently recruiting for.

There will be a food to go selection with takeaway coffee and an in-store bakery plus a variety of regionally sourced products within its Local Flavours range including Kent Crisps and Kentish Mayde Pies. For added customer convenience, as well as main tills, there will also be self-service checkouts.

Jessica Hughes, Community Investment Manager at Southern Co-op, said: “Since we launched our ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ programme, we have partnered up with a wide variety of charities and good causes from local schools and men’s sheds to hospitals and mental health charities.

“Our colleagues across our retail stores and funeral homes have a passion for helping the communities which they work in so have come up with some great fundraising ideas including quizzes, tea parties, summer fetes and bike rides. There are so many ways to raise money for a good cause and have lots of fun at the same time. We look forward to finding Bromley’s new charity partner.”

Residents have until 22 February to nominate the charity closest to their hearts as they are asked to think of a project which will really benefit the local community.

The partnership could be with any local cause, it is not limited to registered charities, and they will be invited to participate in the store opening at 10am on Wednesday 6 March.

The project must meet one of Southern Co-op’s ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’ themes – creating greener, safer, healthier or more inclusive neighbourhoods.
