Signature Living the Liverpool based hotel developer and operator has secured planning approval for the £15M development of one of Northern Irelands most historical and controversial buildings, the former Crumlin Road Courthouse in Belfast.
The company which has a portfolio of 13 hotels across the UK – including the award winning 30 James Street, the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool and the Exchange Hotel in Cardiff – aims to launch the 77 bedroom boutique hotel in the late summer of 2019 and will create 150 jobs in the city.
The courthouse – originally designed by architect Charles Lanyon – was completed in 1850 and became home to some of the most notorious  and high profile terrorist trials throughout the troubles.
The grade A listed building is also uniquely linked to the Crumlin Road Gaol through an underground passage to the court and is steeped in history.  The courthouse presided over thousands of terrorist trials with a total of 17 executions taking place in the Crumlin Road Gaol before it was closed in June 1998.
The Courthouse will be the second of four hotel projects in Belfast for the Liverpool based company which is investing £80M into the city.
