Peabody residents across London and the home counties are being given the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £2,000 for projects and activities in their areas, as part of a new fund in memory of the late Lord Bob Kerslake.

The £40,000 annual fund will provide grants of up to £2,000 to individuals and community groups twice a year to support projects and activities that promote happiness, health, and community wellbeing.

In each round, £20,000 will be allocated to successful projects, with the first round of applications now open.

Grants will be available for regular clubs, one-off events, or new projects that make a real difference in the lives of people who live in or near Peabody homes. It could include activities that help children and young people, prevent homelessness, or provide essential support for refugees to settle in the community.

Lord Bob Kerslake, who sadly died in July 2023, worked as a senior civil servant in central and local government, and he was president of the Local Government Association and chair to health, education and social housing organisations including Peabody – a role he held at the time of his death. He was hugely respected figure in the housing sector known for his tireless dedication to improving people’s lives, particularly those of young people.

Sahil Khan, director of community strategy, partnerships and funding for Peabody, said: “Lord Bob dedicated his life to improving people’s lives and strengthening communities, and we hope this scheme will carry forward his legacy in a way that truly reflects his passion and commitment.

“We’re aiming to fund a wide range of activities that bring people together, reduce loneliness, get communities active, and improve mental health.”

Applications for the first round will close on Friday 25 October. For more information on eligibility and how to apply, visit www.Peabody.org.uk and type ‘Kerslake Award’ in the search box. The web page also gives details of a webinar people can join – on Thursday 10 October at 6pm – to find out more.

This fund is one of several ways Peabody is honouring Lord Bob’s lasting impact. In addition to the grant scheme, the not-for-profit housing association will be introducing a £10,000 bursary, starting in 2025, aimed at supporting 16–24-year-olds with education, training, or work experience opportunities. More information will be available soon.
