A popular London climbing centre is set to reopen this autumn after one of its former climbers stepped in to help bring it back to life.
Gantry Climbing, a new Community Interest Company founded by climber Andy Savage, is preparing to reopen the former Arch Climbing Wall site at Surrey Quays.
Andy previously climbed at The Arch himself and, following the centre’s closure, saw an opportunity not only to bring climbing back to Surrey Quays, but to create a centre with a strong community focus.
The venue will welcome experienced climbers and complete beginners, with bouldering walls for both adults and younger climbers.
As a Community Interest Company, Gantry also hopes to build strong links with the surrounding community, including local schools, families, youth groups and community organisations, helping more people in the area access climbing.
Andy Savage, founder of Gantry Climbing, said:
“When The Arch closed, it felt like the community had lost something really valuable.
“I climbed here myself, so I knew the centre and understood what it meant to the people who used it. When the opportunity came up to bring climbing back to Surrey Quays, I really wanted to make that happen.
“With Gantry, we want to keep the things people loved about climbing here, while also making sure the centre plays a bigger role in the local community.
“We’d love to work with schools, families and local groups and introduce climbing to people who may never have tried it before. Climbing is such a brilliant way to get active, build confidence and challenge yourself, and we want Gantry to feel welcoming whether you have been climbing for years or are stepping onto the wall for the first time.”
Work is now underway at the Surrey Quays site ahead of a planned public opening in October.
Gantry is also working with the Canada Water team at British Land as preparations continue, with opportunities to connect with local residents, community groups and schools ahead of the opening. Andy added:
“There is a lot happening behind the scenes at the moment, but it is incredibly exciting seeing the centre starting to come back to life.
“The biggest thing for us is getting the doors open and welcoming people back in. Whether you climbed here before, have always fancied trying it or simply live locally and want to see what we’re building, we’re looking forward to having you here.”
