David Lean Cinema unveils new look and website

Croydon’s volunteer-led independent cinema has unveiled a new look and website, designed to make it easier for audiences to discover films, book tickets and find out more about the cinema.

Based in Croydon Clocktower, the David Lean Cinema has been bringing people together through film since reopening as a community cinema in 2014.

The new visual identity builds on what already makes the cinema distinctive – its independence, its volunteers, its connection to Croydon and its passion for film – while creating a clearer and more consistent presence across its communications.

Its new logo takes inspiration from the proportions of the cinema screen itself. The two frames reflect the screen and a familiar cinema film format, creating a simple, distinctive mark rooted in the experience of watching a film at the cinema.

The cinema’s connection to the famous film director Sir David Lean also remains an important part of its story. Born in Croydon, Lean went on to become one of Britain’s most celebrated filmmakers, creating films that transported audiences to different countries, periods, lives and ways of seeing the world. This idea helped inspire a new message for the cinema: See the world. One film at a time.

Alongside the new identity, the cinema has launched a new website designed to make it easier to explore what’s on, discover different screenings and events, and book tickets. A new News section will also highlight forthcoming events, special screenings and Q&As with filmmakers and actors.

Sam Clark, Chair of the David Lean Cinema, said:
“This isn’t about creating a new David Lean Cinema. It’s about making it easier for more people to discover the cinema we already are – one built by people who care about film, about Croydon and about sharing the experience of seeing something wonderful on the big screen.
“We’re incredibly proud of where we’ve come from and excited about where we’re going next.”

Joanna Scanlan, Patron of the David Lean Cinema, added:
“The volunteers have overcome challenges over the last decade that would have defeated almost anyone else. The cinema is thriving and much cherished, and there is so much to celebrate. The new look feels like a fitting reflection of that success – and of the care and commitment that have kept this wonderful cinema alive.”

The David Lean Cinema is located on Level 1 at Croydon Clocktower, Katharine Street, Croydon CR9 1ET.
