Opticians launch scheme to ensure Hendon people in crisis don’t go without

VULNERABLE people in Hendon are set to benefit after a local store began an initiative to donate essential items to Colindale Foodbank.

Specsavers store partners Birju Lakhani and Shilpa Gadhia are contributing provisions to the foodbank, with the aim of helping individuals, including children, who are in crisis.

To extend the scheme, the Specsavers store is also encouraging customers and shoppers to get involved by contributing long-life food and household items. The foodbank collects donations from the store on a bi-weekly basis and then distributes the essential items across the community.

Birju, retail director at Specsavers Kingsbury and Specsavers Hendon, which is situated within the Sainsbury’s Hendon Superstore, says: ‘As a local business, we’re passionate about supporting the community we serve. We know that many individuals and families are facing challenges, so we wanted to make a difference and offer some support.

‘Sainsbury’s also have an in-store foodbank, so between the two of us, hopefully we can assist local individuals and families who are struggling with the ever-increasing cost of living which is impacting the household budget.’

Colindale Foodbank, situated at Trinity Church in the North West Centre, was established in 2012. Last year, 15,542 food parcels were provided across the Hendon community, with an estimated 5,436 being distributed to children.

The foodbank, which is the busiest across the Borough of Barnet, has itself seen a rise in the number of people from various parts of the community visiting them.

Ursula, Manager at Colindale Foodbank says: ‘We are very grateful to Birju, Shilpa and the store team for their support and donations, which provide essential supplies to adults and families across the community.’

Posters have been put up in the Specsavers Hendon and Specsavers Kingsbury stores to raise awareness of this initiative. Anyone able to support it can donate long-life items in the store. For further information, go online at https://colindale.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/
