Aldi stores in London make the first move to trial the removal of plastic packaging from wholefood nuts, in a bid to further reduce plastic waste.
The UK’s fifth-largest supermarket is trialling the removal of plastic packaging from its 200g bags of Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts and Mixed Nuts.
‘The plastic-free, paper packaging is being trialled in 20 stores in London as part of a trial in 230 stores across the UK.
It will remove a total of 50 tonnes of plastic per year from Aldi stores if successful.
Richard Gorman, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: “We are committed to reducing plastic packaging wherever possible, while still offering the highest-quality products at unbeatable prices.
“This latest trial on wholefood nuts is a further illustration of our commitment to reducing plastic waste.”
In July last year, Aldi announced new commitments to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025. The commitment will see the supermarket remove 74,000 tonnes of plastic from use over the next five years.
