The RSPCA is appealing for information after a dead dog was found on the banks of the River Thames in central London.
A member of the public called the RSPCA after spotting the severely decomposed body of a white canine hanging by a tree below a pathway near St. George Wharf Pier in Vauxhall on Tuesday morning (April 1).
As the location was difficult to access, RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Julia Pernas requested the help of the London Fire Brigade to bring the white and tan-coloured dog onto the path where she was able to make an assessment.
The body, which was not microchipped, was taken to RSPCA Leybourne Animal Centre and because of the suspicious circumstances it was found in the animal charity is appealing for anyone who may know anything about the dog to get in touch.
“This poor dog’s body was hanging by a tree branch close to the pier near to the Riverside pub at this Thames-side location,” said ARO Julia. “This is a busy area and while the location where the dog was found is difficult to reach there may be someone who has seen someone acting suspiciously before this dog was disposed of in such a cruel manner.
“As the location was difficult to get to we were grateful for the help of the London Fire Brigade for retrieving the body of the dog. Working together is so important for animal welfare.”
Because of the state of decomposition of the body it is not known for certain what sex or breed the dog is. The dog was found close to the Riverside restaurant near a walking path below the river railings.
