A London nurse who supports women hospitalised for their mental health has scooped a national award for the work she does to support other nurses with their career prospects.
Sujata Sharma is the Clinical Quality and Compliance Manager at Cygnet Hospital Beckton, a 58-bed hospital on Tunnan Leys which offers support to women across four different specialist wards including PICU, acute admissions and personality disorder services.
She has been recognised for her outstanding care and compassion at Cygnet’s annual nursing awards where she won the Nurse Education Leader award and was recognised alongside other nurses from across Cygnet health and social care services.
The Cygnet Nursing Conference and Awards took place last week at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.
On receiving her award Sujata said: “Winning the Nurse Education Award was truly an incredible moment for me. I was shortlisted last year as well, so receiving the award this time meant even more, it felt like a recognition of the journey, growth, and passion I’ve poured into this role.

“Nursing has always been very close to my heart. My decision to work in mental health was deeply influenced by my grandfather’s diagnosis of dementia. Supporting him during that time shaped my understanding of compassionate care and inspired me to pursue this path.

“I came to the UK in 2021 as an international nurse and started my journey with Cygnet Hospital Beckton as a Registered Mental Health Nurse. Since then, I’ve grown into the roles of Clinical Practice Lead, Practice Development Nurse, and now Interim Quality and Compliance Manager. Every step has been a learning experience, and I feel proud to contribute to a sector that makes such a meaningful impact on people’s lives.”

The event was hosted by David Wilmott, Cygnet’s Director of Nursing, who said: “The awards provide an opportunity for staff to nominate colleagues for the exceptional work that they do. This year we had a record number of nominations and it gives me enormous pleasure to recognise those like Sujata who make outstanding contributions to the care that our service users and residents receive.”

Nominating Sujata, the team at Cygnet Hospital Beckton said: “Sujata is an amazing leader who has demonstrated and made a significant contribution to education, training, or professional development for all staff. We want to recognise her for her hard work and dedication.”
