Belvedere Infant and Junior School in Bexley recently held their second Black History Month celebration evening (following last year’s celebrations), showcasing the rich variety of cultures that make up its diverse community.

The event, held at Belvedere Junior School on 18 October, was a joyful tribute to the contributions and histories of Black communities from around the world, featuring a mixture of performances, artwork, and food that delighted parents, pupils and staff.

Performances included traditional songs and dances from countries including Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria, each representing their unique cultural heritage.

Everyone proudly showcased their talents in the spirit of unity and celebration, with one parent stating: “We were welcomed with grace, smiles and laughter. All different shades coming together to embrace the culture.”

In addition to the performances, the event featured an impressive display of artwork created by the children, reflecting themes of diversity and inclusion.

A delicious assortment of dishes that represented the varied backgrounds of the school’s families was served, from tasty jollof rice to juicy jerk chicken. Adults and children loved the party atmosphere, eating and dancing the night away.

“This celebration is not just about recognising Black history; it’s about embracing the diversity that enriches our school,” said Miss Lynch, Executive Head Teacher at Belvedere Infant and Junior School, part of The Pioneer Academy Trust. “We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every culture is celebrated, and events like this remind us of the beauty that comes from our differences.”
