Berkeley Group has celebrated the topping out of The Halo, a unique building constructed inside the world-famous gasholder overlooking the Kia Oval cricket ground in London.
As part of this complex project the surrounding Grade II Listed gasholder frame, which dates back to 1879, is being carefully restored to preserve the site’s heritage.

Once completed, The Halo will deliver nearly 200 homes, many of which benefit from views into the Kia Oval. There is a communal rooftop terrace to watch cricket, a mix of amenities and co-working space.

Paul Vallone, Chairman of Berkeley St Edward, said: “We are proud to transform this centuries-old, derelict gasholder into a dynamic residential destination in Oval. With direct views into the cricket ground and a design which boasts sweeping curves, white metalwork and generous balconies, the development echoes the drama of the sport and provides a unique living experience.

“This regeneration is a prime example of how brownfield sites can be revitalised, unlocking housing potential while preserving the area’s unique character and heritage.”
The building is part of Berkeley Group’s wider Oval Village masterplan, which will deliver over 1,300 private and affordable homes, high-quality landscaped public spaces, shops, cafés, restaurant and leisure space – generating over 1,000 jobs in the process.

This brownfield site is being reconnected with the local community for the first time in decades, with a network of public paths and cycleways being woven through the neighbourhood.

The landscape designs will include 2.5 acres of tree-lined routes, communal gardens and two new public spaces.

A topping out ceremony took place on 14 May, bringing together Berkeley Group, Lambeth Council, Surrey County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and the Lord’s Taverners. As part of the ceremony, young players from the Lord’s Taverners Super 1s disability cricket programme embedded signed cricket balls into the rooftop concrete, in a tribute to the Berkeley Foundation’s £750,000 commitment to the charity’s life-changing work.

Homes will launch from 7 June 2025, with residents expected to move in from 2028.
