Black History Month: London’s Chief Nurse on diverse healthcare leadership

0

This Black History Month, senior NHS London executives reflect on the importance of diverse representation within leadership teams, and the powerful influence this has on healthcare services across the capital.

Karen Bonner, Chief Nurse for the NHS in London, first began her nursing career after being inspired by her mother, who served 20 years as an NHS support worker.

After working at a variety of London hospitals for 25 years, the pinnacle of Karen’s career came in 2020, when she embraced her first board-level position, rising to the challenge of leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This Black History Month, Karen shares what the theme, ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, means to her, and reflects on the importance of diversity in healthcare leadership.

Karen Bonner, Chief Nurse at NHS England, London region, said:

“This is my first year as the chief nurse for the London Region at NHS England, and I’ve loved every moment! It’s such a joy to collaborate with chief nurses across the country and connect with all the outstanding nurses, midwives, nursing associates, support workers and other colleagues within London.

“I lead the capital’s nurses and midwives to uphold quality and clinical standards that effectively support local health systems and the diverse communities they serve. This provides me with a fantastic opportunity to make a positive impact across the region.

“The 2025 Black History Month theme, ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, resonates with me deeply. It serves as a powerful reminder that Black history is not just about overcoming struggles, but also about unity, power, and the desire for an equitable future. This month provides an invaluable opportunity to highlight and celebrate the contributions of black culture and people in the UK.

“Therefore, I want to take this moment to acknowledge the incredible work being done by our Black colleagues here at NHSE London. We have so many outstanding individuals and teams making a real difference. I’m endlessly grateful to the nursing and quality teams for their hard work and commitment to delivering exceptional care across London. Your efforts shine brightly and make a meaningful impact.

“It’s crucial for individuals to know who they are and what they stand for, and to proudly embrace the power of the black experience. Throughout my career, living my values has been my guiding light, while curiosity has driven me to strive for excellence and deliver the highest quality care.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to build a strong network of supportive colleagues whose shared values have been integral to my growth. Representation matters! When you can see people who look like you succeeding, it opens a world of possibilities.

“It’s vital to challenge those outdated views that may suggest people of colour are less capable of leadership. The truth is, black leaders bring immense resilience borne out of personal struggles, and this diversity of thought only serves to enhance innovation.

“So, to my fantastic black colleagues dreaming of leadership, my advice? Go for it! Chase those dreams with everything you’ve got. Don’t hesitate to find your cheerleaders—they can truly make a difference. Embrace your awesome skills and the unique flair you bring to the table. And remember, always be open to learning and growing.”
