Brixton Village, London’s most diverse and vibrant market is delighted to present an exciting month-long programme of cultural events in celebration of Caribbean culture in the lead up to Notting Hill Carnival this August.
Kicking off the celebrations will be a series of Samba-reggae dance and Drumming workshops with Dende Nation every Monday and Tuesday, plus acclaimed dancehall teacher and performer Miss Rose will be gracing the markets with a further series of dance classes in BRXTN Village Studios every Wednesday. Island Girls Rock are also set to join the programme with a panel discussion on body positivity, and an exciting all-female talent takeover of the markets’ outdoor courtyard with live music and food.

Brixton Village is pleased to announce its partnership with Dende Nation – the UK-based Samba-reggae Bloco, to deliver an exciting programme of workshops across dance and music centred around Samba Reggae. An Afro-Brazilian style of drumming and dance, often seen out on the streets at carnival time with costumes and dancers, guests will be invited to learn and celebrate these uplifting rhythms through dance and drumming.
Drawing the programme to a close, Dende Nation will be doing a final performance on Saturday 28th August through the market avenues, with participation from London Schools, Community Groups, and Dancers from Bristol led by Vero Leopoldino

Brixton Village is pleased to welcome acclaimed dancehall teacher Miss Rose to bring her expertise to the markets for a series of classes every Wednesday this August.
A professional dancehall & soca performer, Miss Rose is part of the renowned Supa Nytro collective, performed as a lead-dancer for Skillibeng’s UK tour, performed and hosted talks at SOAS discussing the spiritual and cultural aspects of Dancehall. Recently, she performed solo for the opening of Stormzy’s O2 Arena show alongside Rachael Anson.

Brixton Village are excited to welcome Island Girls Rock for an all-female talent take-over of the markets’ outdoor courtyard. With DJs playing Soca & traditional carnival music, and a live steel pan band, be sure to show off your moves and end your day with roti & jerk food.
Catch Island Girls Rock on Thursday 11 August for a live podcast recording around body positivity hosted by Emma Mathurine aka Dominican Emz. The conversation will explore how (and if!) the carnival community accepts, represents, and celebrates all body shapes and sizes.
Joining Emma will be joined by singer/songwriter Michelle Escoffery Ojo, Anneline Flood – (I Love Carnival), Michelle Lucas (The Quiet Creative) and founder of Island Girls Rock, Chantal Miller.
Island Girls Rock was founded by Caribbean native Chantal Miller, with a goal to create a platform to ensure that Caribbean women were given a platform which represented them beyond the expected ‘norm’.
