This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Windrush, the ship that brought the first post-war migrants from the Caribbean to Britain in 1948. To celebrate this historic occasion, Brixton Village is set to unveil an awe-inspiring mural honouring the courage, hard work and resilience of the Windrush generation.
Designed by renowned local graffiti artist Bunny, the mural will be unveiled on Windrush Day on Thursday 22nd June. Measuring an impressive 8 x 24 ft, it captures the indelible legacy of the Windrush generation, whose many contributions have helped to create the rich culture of Brixton and beyond.
The colourful display showcases the inspiring stories of 21 trailblazing figures who were children of the Windrush community, such as Grace Jones, Gus John, Jah Shaka, Benjamin Zephaniah and many others. Through the mural, visitors will have the opportunity to learn the real stories about the people who have redefined British culture, with the aim of fostering a deeper appreciation for the Windrush Generation.
Brixton Village, in conjunction with Brixton Project and Just Vibez, will be hosting a commemorative party from 2pm until 10pm, on Thursday 22nd June.
As part of the Windrush Day celebrations in the Village, Sharlene-Monique, one of Brixton’s most talented new artists, will be performing at 7pm. She has written a powerful song dedicated to the Windrush event, which captures its deep historical significance.
The event will also feature various artists performing songs inspired by the Windrush and celebrating its long-lasting cultural influence.
The all-dayer promises to be an unforgettable experience with performances from Floetic Lara and of course, Just Vibez DJs.
Visitors can enjoy a delicious selection of food that highlights the rich culinary heritage of the Caribbean and there will be activities for children with Know Your Caribbean, Carnival models and Live Calypso.
This lively party will transform the market into a true celebration of Caribbean culture and celebrate the traders who continue to bring the original spirit of Windrush to Brixton Village.
The celebrations will continue Saturday 24th, with DJ sets from the likes of Dubplate Pearl and live performances from Lionhaire.
Commenting on the Windrush 75 celebrations in the Village, Diana Nabagereka, the General Manager of Brixton Village said:
“In true Brixton fashion, we want to encourage a celebration with us and for us on this day. We hope that, with this magnificent mural, residents and visitors alike can join the Windrush Generation to celebrate the unique stories and understand the rich culture that surrounds this market.”
