Tesco colleagues have been busy welcoming customers to the retailer’s newest London store.
The brand-new Brixton Station Express opened its doors for the first time on the morning of Thursday the 5th of February, with colleagues eager to welcome customers inside for the first time. The store is located directly opposite Brixton Tube Station and is well situated to serve both the surrounding residential area and day trippers visiting one of London’s most vibrant areas.
Among the features on offer are a wide range of food to go options, a bakery section and lottery tickets.
The store will initially have 13 colleagues, 7 of which are newly employed by Tesco.
Store manager Minalben Patel said, “I’m delighted to be opening our new store here in Brixton. I have been a store manager with Tesco for three years and am looking forward to serving the local community as well as helping local people through our community initiatives like the Community Food Connection Scheme and supporting local schools and youth groups through our grant programme.”
Area Manager Lee Murphy said, “I am really excited to be adding this store to our group. We have local stores in Stockwell, Brixton Road and Clapham and we are really looking forward to serving the local community.”
Local schools, registered charities and not-for-profit organisations supporting children and young people are also being invited to apply for up to £1,500 for causes that improve access to healthy, nutritious food.
This could include breakfast or holiday clubs, cooking or gardening initiatives, providing fruit or healthy snacks for a sports club or projects that build life skills, confidence and wellbeing.
The new store is also participating in the Community Food Connection scheme, which redistributes surplus food to charities and community groups from every Tesco store at the end of each day.
Since its launch in 2016, the Tesco Community Food Connection Scheme has donated more than 145 million meals to charities across the UK.
This scheme is run in partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare. Each month more than one million meals’ worth of food are donated across the country.
