Staff and pupils at Downe Primary School have celebrated National Fitness Day with a whole-school athletic event. The school, part of The Pioneer Academy Trust, organised the day as part of their efforts to encourage pupils to live a healthy and more active lifestyle.

At Downe Primary School, the entire school came together for an action-packed afternoon on the school field, featuring five different activity stations designed to get the children moving, having fun, and learning about the benefits of fitness. Each class rotated through these stations, building up points throughout the day.

To cap off the event, all students participated in a “Walk a Mile” challenge, completing 4 laps of the school field. This not only promoted endurance but also encouraged a sense of achievement as the students worked towards their fitness goals together.

The class that earned the most points will be crowned the winners in a special assembly on Friday. The competition saw enthusiastic participation from the school staff as well, who will be joining the students in the fitness challenges.

Having been started in 2011 by charity UK Active, National Fitness Day is a chance to highlight the role that physical activity plays in helping us lead a healthier lifestyle. Held across the UK annually, National Fitness Day aims to encourage the nation to get moving and bring people together.

This year’s campaign theme is ‘Your Health is for Life’, and aims to encourage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to recognise and celebrate the lifelong mental and physical benefits of being active.

Matt Ferguson, Head of School at Downe Primary School, said:
“We all enjoyed taking part in National Fitness Day and taking part in the different activities. It was particularly rewarding to watch the children working together, supporting one another, and showing real determination during the ‘Walk a Mile’ challenge.

“I’m incredibly proud of everyone’s efforts and the positive message this event sends to our pupils about the importance of staying active for life. This year’s theme, ‘Your Health is for Life,’ resonates deeply with our approach at Downe Primary School, where we aim to instil lifelong habits that promote both physical and mental well-being.”
