A unique ‘supersized’ corporate cooking event is coming to the iconic Borough Market on Wednesday 17th September, bringing businesses together to prepare 500+ meals for London’s homeless community in just four hours.

‘Feed the 500’, a not-for-profit event organised by Team Tactics, has been launched in support of Plan Zheroes, a charity fighting food waste and poverty across London.

Organisations can now enter teams of 10 to take part in the multi-business event, which will see participants cooking alongside professional chefs from Emerge Cookery School to achieve the 500-meal feat. The meals will be distributed to London’s homeless community after the event, while participants will get to sample their culinary efforts with a sit-down meal alongside colleagues and other teams.

The event comes as food insecurity and poverty in the capital reaches record highs, and the cost-of-living crisis shows no signs of abating. The latest figures from Trust for London show 6.6% of households are in food insecurity in the capital, while more than 183,000 Londoners are estimated to be homeless or living in temporary accommodation, equating to at least one in every 50.

The event will accommodate up to 10 teams and ticket sales will cover ingredient and equipment costs, with the remainder funding Plan Zheroes’ vital work. The charity connects businesses with surplus food to local charities and community groups in need. To date, Plan Zheroes has facilitated the donation of over 500+ tonnes of food to local charities, equivalent to more than one million meals.

Tina Benson, founder and managing director at Team Tactics, commented: “Combining impact and purpose, Feed the 500 provides an opportunity for businesses to give back and contribute to CSR goals, while strengthening team bonds and networking with like-minded purpose-led companies.

“We’re determined to rally the spirit, unity and passion of the London business community against capital’s food poverty crisis, raising vital awareness and funds to make a real difference to those in need.”

Dee Vadukul, fundraising relationships manager at Plan Zheroes, commented: “It is a really challenging time for charities at the moment. With fewer surplus food donations available from businesses compared to previous years, Feed The 500 will be a wonderful opportunity for us to show our support to our front-line charities by delivering freshly cooked, nutritious meals to service users. The fundraising effort from the event will enable us to keep our work going – preventing great food from going to landfill and getting it to people who need it instead.”
