Canary Wharf Group has added a brand new sport to its already extensive offering – now hosting London’s largest premium padel club, Padium, at 10 Bank Street.

A blend between tennis and squash, padel is played on a small walled court as a doubles game, and makes for a great social sport at any level. Padium has seven indoor panoramic glass courts, one outdoor court, premium shower facilities, a mezzanine lounge, a pro shop and the Ace Bar serving up healthy refreshments.

Padel is currently played in over 90 countries with an estimated 25 million active players, including David Beckham, Serena Williams, Lando Norris and Roger Federer. The sport originates from Mexico and now has over 30,000 courts in Europe and is starting to take off in the UK with around 250 courts nationwide.

The world class padel experience joins Canary Wharf’s extensive sports offering which has been steadily growing over the last few years. The Estate now plays host to some of London’s most innovative sports, courts and clubs, offering an abundance of new ways to get active.

Last year saw the docks transformed into an open water swimming spot for the first time, letting people take a dip underneath the iconic city skyline, while Yinka Ilori’s specially commissioned multicoloured basketball court has returned to Bank Street.

Summer continues into September with AFK beach volleyball – and 200 tonnes of sand –to Canada Square Park for the entire month, while GoBoat offers people a chance to get out on the water all year round.

A vibrantly coloured minigolf course, specially designed by transatlantic duo Craig + Karl, is free to play in Montgomery Square alongside table tennis. For rainy days visitors need just head down to Capital Karts for a go on the UK’s fastest indoor go karting track.

The Wharf boasts a plethora of popular fitness studios including Barry’s Bootcamp, Sweat by BXR, In2Sports, Ultimate Fitness and Third Space, and keen runners can follow the Raise Your Art Rate running route. Three journeys,3km, 5km and 10km, have been designed to take in the Estate’s extensive art collection – the largest free to visit collection in the UK.

With 5km of waterside boardwalks and 16.5 acres of open space, there is a wide choice of activities for those looking to move their bodies during their lunch break or take part in a match with colleagues before or after work.

Shobi Khan, CEO of Canary Wharf Group, said: “We are proud to be home to London’s largest padel club, offering a new fitness hub and a place for people to get involved in the world’s fastest growing sport. We’re excited to expand our sport offering at the Wharf as padel joins the likes of GoBoat, Capital Karts, minigolf, basketball, dodgeball, volleyball and open water swimming – making it the destination to choose for an active lifestyle, whether you’re trying a new sport or a keen triathlete, we have what you need. These amenities combined with our parks, canals, boardwalks and over 70 bars, cafes and restaurants make Canary Wharf a fantastic destination whether you work, live or play here.”

Houman Ashrafzadeh, Padium founder, said: “Back home in Sweden everyone plays this incredibly social game, combining sport and community – padel! After coming to London and seeing the limited choice of courts yet an increasing appetite for padel, I was inspired to open Padium. Canary Wharf is the perfect place to establish our first club as the destination already has a great sport offering and sense of community.”
