Capital gains: London boroughs recognised as national leaders on climate action

London’s boroughs continue to lead the way in tackling the climate crisis, achieving 57% in the latest Climate Scorecards published by Climate Emergency UK. This means that London ranks as the top-performing region in the country for local climate action.1

Despite facing a challenging economic landscape and competing priorities, London’s local authorities are delivering ambitious, practical climate solutions that support economic growth, attract investment and help build healthier, greener communities.

London boroughs are providing energy advice for residents, rolling out solar panels on council buildings and delivering schools streets – making children’s routes to school healthier and safer.

At a regional level, London’s 32 boroughs are collaborating through London Councils’ Climate Programme, a London-wide effort that enables joint projects and shared investment. Key initiatives include:

Warmer Homes London – a central hub coordinating home upgrades to reduce energy bills and create healthier homes for residents, delivered in partnership with the Greater London Authority (GLA).
The Green Growth Pipeline – showcasing £34 billion worth of investment opportunities across London’s low carbon economy, and the job opportunities that come with this2
Strategic social housing upgrades – the capital secured England’s largest joint funding award of £78 million from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, plus £119 million in co-funding, to make homes warmer and healthier across London.3
Electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure – at 24,000 and growing, London now has more EV charging points than any other UK region, making greener and cheaper transport more accessible for Londoners4
Cllr Kieron Williams, London Councils Executive Member for Transport and Environment, said:

“This recognition is a testament to the bold and tireless work of London’s boroughs in responding to the climate emergency. Despite ongoing funding pressures boroughs are leading with practical, innovative action to positively impact residents’ lives – from expanding the number of electric vehicle charging points to make it easier for Londoners to charge their cars, to planting more trees – creating cooler streets and greener neighbourhoods.

“We’re also showing that collaboration makes all the difference. Across London, projects like the Climate Programme and Warmer Homes London are helping to bring in funding, make homes more energy efficient, reduce bills for Londoners, and prepare our communities for the future. There’s still more to do, but this progress proves that local action is key to building a greener, fairer city.”
