Rebecca Gallagher, 55, from Merton, is one of thousands each year who name a star to hang on the Christmas trees at the Celebrate a Life services at The Royal Marsden, which raise vital funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
For over 20 years, supporters have gathered for the Celebrate a Life services at the hospital to celebrate someone special. Every person who names a star makes a donation to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which supports the work of The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. Funds raised help to provide the very best care for cancer patients and develop life-saving treatments which transform the lives of patients in the UK and around the world.
Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and has received treatment at The Royal Marsden ever since. The diagnosis was particularly frightening for her, as her own mother Rachel died from cervical cancer at the age of just 45.
Rebecca’s treatment involved surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. She benefitted from The Royal Marsden’s psychological support service, which is supported by funding from The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, to prepare her for treatment.
“I was so traumatised at the thought of having chemotherapy,” said Rebecca. “Without the extra support I had, particularly from the psychological support team, I don’t think I would have gone through with treatment. Knowing there was someone there for me to talk to, it made such a difference.”
Now, every December, attends The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity’s Celebrate a Life service. She dedicates a star in memory of her Mum.
“She was a beautiful person who was loved by everyone,” Rebecca said.
“Christmas has always been an important time of year in my family, we’d have a big family Christmas, and my Mum was at the heart of this. Celebrate a Life is a great way to remember my Mum at a such special time of year.”
During these special services in Sutton and Chelsea, the Christmas tree lights will be switched on, and supporters can come together to enjoy a selection of carols, prayers, and readings, with performances from local choirs and bands.
“Celebrate a Life is a lovely community event – bringing together so many people who are part of The Royal Marsden family. There is something about seeing all those names on the tree that feels especially poignant,” said Rebecca.
This year’s Celebrate a Life services will take place at The Royal Marsden in Sutton on Tuesday 3 December, and The Royal Marsden in Chelsea on Thursday 5 December from 6pm.
