This year’s annual Childline’s Carol Concert, which took place at Holy Trinity Church in Chelsea and was hosted by Kate Lawler, has raised £64,000 for the NSPCC-service.
Now in its 17th year, the magical evening included a spectacular closing performance by former Sugababes singer, Heidi Range, who sang ‘Baby Please Come Home’ and ‘I’ll be Home for Christmas’.
Ben Miller, Death in Paradise actor and children’s author, entertained the audience by enthusiastically reading an extract from his book ‘The Night I Met Father Christmas’, where he delivered the reading as the character in the book.
In addition, guests were treated to a stellar performance by award-winning classical singer, Ellen Williams and BBC Young Choristers of the Year, Leo Ogungbemi and Alastair Mucklow, while actor Chris Harper (Call the Midwife) and NSPCC Chief Executive, Chris Sherwood, carried out readings.
Gwyneth Strong (Only Fools and Horses) also spoke passionately about her experience working as a Childline volunteer for 12 years.
Kate Lawler, Friend of the NSPCC, said: “It was a huge honour to host last night’s Childline Carol Concert. The evening was truly magical and filled with outstanding performances all dedicated to helping such an important cause.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed and made this such a memorable event for everyone involved.
“It’s also important to remember that for some children, the Christmas season can be a difficult time. The money raised from last night will help ensure Childline continues to be a vital source of support across the festive period.”
TV presenter and Childline President, Rebecca Wilcox, took to the stage and invited the audience to join her in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her mother, Childline founder Esther Rantzen. The spontaneous tribute created a memorable moment that celebrated both family and the incredible legacy of Childline.
Each year, the concert raises vital funds for Childline and offers a memorable, musical spectacular.
Shaun Friel, Director of Childline, said: “The Childline’s Carol Concert is always a special evening, brimming with festive spirit and generosity.
“I’d like to thank everyone who attended, especially all the talented performers. With their incredible support we have raised an outstanding amount to help fund Childline’s vital work.
“Christmas should be a time of joy for every child, yet for many, it can be the most dangerous time of the year. That’s why Childline is here this festive season – to ensure every child has someone to turn to.”
