Young people from across London came together to celebrate a decade of musical excellence at an event in the City.
Around 70 pupils from five schools in the City of London Corporation’s family of schools took part in the 10th anniversary City Schools Concert at Guildhall.
Children performed music and lyrics they had composed themselves under the guidance of creative leads Sigrun Saevarsdottir-Griffiths and Paul Griffiths.
Chair of the City of London Corporation education board Naresh Sonpar said:
“The concert was both a celebration and a statement of our long‑term commitment to music education and opportunity.
“It reinforces the impact that access to high‑quality cultural and musical experiences can have on young people.
“The project puts young people at its heart – their voices, creativity and confidence – and demonstrates the power of sustained investment in arts education.”
The concert featured performances from young people from City of London Primary Academy Islington; Redriff Primary City of London Academy; City of London Academy Southwark; and The City Academy Hackney and City of London School.
Head of Music at The City Academy Hackney Elizabeth Jones said:
“The pupils took part in workshops in which they collaboratively developed the lyrics, melodies and beats. It was a privilege to observe the creative process, and remarkable that music of such a high standard was produced in such a short time.
“The pupils were really enthusiastic and energised by the experience of performing in such a prestigious venue. Some of them described the experience as ‘life-changing’ and parents and families expressed great pride in their accomplishments.”
The City of London family of schools comprises 12 sponsored academies across London within the City of London Academies Trust, one maintained primary school in the City and four independent schools.
