INSPIRED by the impact of the number of people experiencing homelessness around Clapham Junction, the team at Specsavers raised much-needed funds for the charity Crisis, when they hosted a cake bake for the charity.
The event was arranged by Specsavers Clapham Junction’s directors – Millie Bryant, Neil Bryant and Yannick Dyant – who rallied the store’s team to put on a mouthwatering selection of tasty goodies.
Their aim was to raise as much as possible for Crisis, whose work with people experiencing homelessness includes providing practical one-to-one support to help to access benefits, healthcare services and employment opportunities.
Millie, the Clapham store’s retail director, says: ‘It was really motivating knowing that with every donation we were raising funds for such a worthy cause. As Specsavers’ national charity partner, we really wanted to help support those experiencing homelessness, especially as many of us see people sleeping on the streets around Clapham, and it’s increased over the last five years.
‘We were amazed at the support we received from customers and passers-by. The store team were really behind this fundraiser, which raised £412.
‘Neil, Yannick and I were so thrilled with this achievement, that we decided to match this amount as a business. So, in total we will be donating £824 to Crisis – well done to everyone involved.’
The Specsavers support of the Crisis at Christmas campaign was first launched in December 2022 with the aim of expanding the range of health and wellbeing services offered to those experiencing homelessness via the charity’s nationwide network of Skylight Centres.
More than 320,000 households in England faced homelessness in 2023/241 – the highest on record. Crisis actively lobbies government highlighting the need for more support and solutions, including the provision of more social housing to alleviate this situation.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues, it is highly likely that this alarming figure will increase further, with many more put at real risk of homelessness as financial pressures intensify. The charity works with thousands of people experiencing homelessness, providing education, training and support with housing, employment and health. Through its frontline services across Britain, the charity helps people find a path out of homelessness for good.
