Julie Brooker, Communities Partner (Social Value) at housing association A2Dominion, was recognised for ‘Providing an outstanding volunteering service as an Appropriate Adult supporting local communities by assisting those in need. For over 10 years of continuous support to the Metropolitan Police Service’.
Julie travels to police stations across West London to carry out the role and was presented with the award by Detective Superintendent Figo Forouzan.
An Appropriate Adult is someone who safeguards the interests, rights, entitlements and welfare of children and vulnerable people who have been suspected of a crime. They make sure that individuals are treated fairly, and are able to participate effectively when they are in custody. This helps make sure that convictions are safe and just.
Julie got involved in the role almost 12 years ago after seeing a local online advert, she then went on to complete a training course and has continued her work ever since.
Julie said: “I really enjoy doing it and giving back, I treat everyone the same, no matter what. It was a real surprise to get the award, but some of the staff in the custody suite had said they wanted to give me some recognition for a long time. It was an unexpected surprise.”
