A fraudster who pretended to be caring for a vulnerable man and stole £33,000 of taxpayers’ money over four years has been sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court.
Mrs Luong Thi Do, of Woolwich, took money from the council while claiming to be a full-time carer, but instead splashed the cash on holidays and cars.
Council officers launched a full investigation that found the vulnerable man supposedly receiving full-time care had only been in the country for a total six months over a five-year period.
On August 16, Mrs Do pled guilty to charges of dishonestly making false representations to the Council and was given a two-year suspended prison sentence and 200 hours unpaid work to be completed within 12 months.
Councillor Denise Hyland, Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Social Value, said: “We were appalled to discover that someone would take advantage of our Direct Payment scheme which is designed to support our most vulnerable residents.
“While this is an isolated case, we will show no tolerance to misuse of Council funds on lavish lifestyles, when so many residents struggle with the cost of living crisis. Now more than ever, it is so important that every penny available goes to those who need it.
“We will continue to investigate and prosecute those who are exploiting the system for their own personal and illegal gain.”
