Council members at a Croydon school chose an auspicious date to visit the Houses of Parliament.

Exactly 420 years after the infamous gunpowder plot, children from Chestnut Park Primary School, a member of GLF Schools Multi Academy Trust, visited the seat of government and there was no hint of a rebellion.

“They toured the historic building, explored the roles of the different houses and deepened their understanding of democracy, The students engaged enthusiastically, asking thoughtful questions throughout the day,” said Suzie Jones, Assistant Head Teacher.

One of the council members, Skylar, said: “I enjoyed learning about the laws and how new laws are made. It was exciting learning about how MPs vote.”

“The trip offered a valuable opportunity for our young leaders to see democracy in action and gain insight into how decisions that shape our society are made,” added Mrs Jones.

The School Council, elected earlier this term, will also lead fundraising initiatives for new projects as well as representing the student body and assisting staff in planning key school events.

Speaking shortly after the students took up their roles, headteacher Jason Ofori said the nominees had put a huge amount of effort into their nominations and added their commitment had been ‘a highlight’ of his first few weeks as he joined at the start of term.

The gunpowder plot of 1605 was an attempt by Guy Fawkes and co-conspirators to blow up Parliament and assassinate James I and VI of England. The plot was uncovered in the early hours of 1605 when a cellar directly beneath the House of Lords was found to be packed with gunpowder.
