Children from Chestnut Park Primary School in Croydon were ‘bowled over’, when they enjoyed an extra-curricular outing to Tenpin Valley Park.
The trip saw a mixed group from Years 3, 4, and 5 test their bowling skills, and was organised by the school’s PE Lead, Dominic Bradford, after he received free tickets for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) pupils at the school.
“The group travelled to Tenpin Valley Park in Croydon, where the children spent the afternoon bowling,” said Elena Abril, SEN Teacher at Chestnut Park, which is a member of the GLF Schools multi-academy trust.
“Each pupil played two full games, learning how to bowl and practising their techniques.”
Staff accompanying the group included Mr Bradford, SEN Teacher Hayley Boothe, and SEN Teaching Assistant Akino James, who all tried their hand at bowling, alongside the children.
“The children particularly enjoyed the friendly competition, both against one another and against the teachers,” continued Mrs Abril. “They loved celebrating each other’s successes, and developed confidence as they improved with every round.
“Their excitement, teamwork, and joy in trying something new, were among the most memorable moments of the day.”
“Events of this nature usually only take place when Croydon Council offers free opportunities to the school, which allows pupils to participate in enrichment activities that may otherwise be unavailable to them,” she added.
“These trips are highly valuable for pupils, particularly those with SEND. They offer access to new experiences outside the classroom – experiences many of the children may not be accustomed to.
“Such activities support social development, as pupils interact, collaborate, and cheer one another on; emotional wellbeing through positive, shared experiences and confidence-building challenges; physical development by engaging in an active, skill-based sport; and inclusion and equality of opportunity, ensuring all pupils benefit from wide community resources.
“Overall, trips like this enrich the children’s education experience, and contribute meaningfully to their personal growth.”
