Croydon school says Hello Yellow for charity

There was an outbreak of not-so-mellow yellow at a Croydon primary school when pupils highlighted awareness for World Mental Health Day.

Everything from socks and headbands to football shirts and sweatshirts were on show at Chestnut Park Primary School, a member of GLF Schools Multi Academy Trust. Children paid £1 to help raise money for the charity behind the initiative, Young Minds.

“At our school, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Creating space for children to reflect, express themselves, and learn how to look after their wellbeing is vital. Days like this help build emotional literacy and resilience and remind every child that it’s okay to talk and it’s okay to ask for help,” said Suzie Jones, Assistant Headteacher.

Aside from wearing something yellow, children from Reception to Year 6 explored the theme of mental wellbeing through creative and reflective activity including a feelings-focused art session.

Under the Hello Yellow slogan, the annual event is designed to focus on the Young Minds charity which was raising awareness of young people’s mental health. It is a global event and was first held in 1992.

Young Minds campaigns to ensure young people who need support with their mental health receive timely intervention and care. According to the charity, there was a ten per cent increase of referrals to emergency mental health care for children and young people between 2023 and 2024.
