Former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker has warned his colleagues not to waste votes on woke issues after the party tabled a debate claiming menstruation was not ‘merely a women’s issue.’
Discussing the debate at Liberal Democrat Party conference Mr Baker told GB News:
“I would say to my colleagues, who I want to do well election and show every sign of doing well at the election, they’re winning by election after by election – I would say to them, ‘Do not throw your votes away on something most people don’t agree with.’”
Mr Baker said he did “not agree” that menstruation was something which affected anyone other than women in a discussion with Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner.
“I don’t think they are representing the views of the nation on that particular issue,” he said.
“I think they do on many other issues, but not on that particular one.”
The debate, tabled for Saturday 23rd September, says:
‘Menstruation is not just a women’s issue, and also affects some trans and non-binary people.’
The submission also asks conference to note that ‘period products are a human right, not a luxury’, and demands the Government ‘introduces a right for people in England to access a choice of free period products’.
Pierce told the former minister, “Apparently your lot think that if you identify as a woman you should get free tampax.”
In May, Lib Dem leader Ed Davey made headlines when he said that “clearly” women could have a penis.
Under Brussels rules, the UK government was not allowed to lower the rate of VAT on some female hygiene products as it was an EU competence.
The ‘Tampon Tax’ was abolished by the government on 1st January 2021 with a zero rate of VAT applying to women’s sanitary products.
