Downe Primary School recently held a moving Remembrance Day event together with staff, pupils, parents and members of the local community.
The school’s Remembrance Day event took place on the morning of Monday 11 November when a special assembly was held for pupils, reflecting on the significance of Remembrance Day.
Year 6 pupils from Downe Primary then read specially chosen remembrance poems outside the school. The whole school and members of the local community, including Downe Livery Stables, observed the two minutes silence. A musician from Downe Livery Stables also played The Last Post on a saxophone.
Downe Livery Stables also brought along one of their ponies and the children were pleased to be able to meet the pony after the ceremony.
To highlight the significance of Remembrance Day to the local community, Downe Primary displayed a school memorial to remember those who gave their lives in the First World War, and this was present throughout the event.
One local resident said: “It is so lovely to see how the school shares events like these with the local community” and a pupil poignantly stated: “It is important for us to show our respects to all those who have helped us to live the lives we do in Downe village.”
Matt Ferguson, Head of School at Downe Primary, part of The Pioneer Academy Trust, said:
“Remembrance events will always be an important time to come together as a community and show our respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“I am very proud of our pupils for their dignified behaviour and thoughtful reflections.”
