Elderly London cat named Mr April in charity calendar

Losing a leg and being on the wrong side of middle age didn’t stop London boy Jack becoming a pin up in a charity calendar.

The 18-year-old black cat from Bexleyheath looks a picture of health in his role as Mr April in the Cats Protection Cat Calendar 2023.

Jack was rescued by Amy Perrett, a charity worker at Cats Protection’s North London Adoption Centre, in Archway. She said: “Jack came into care in March 2021 when his owner passed away. We all fell in love with him immediately as he had such a gentle nature and was a very chatty boy.

“Sadly, he had been in a road accident as a kitten and had developed epilepsy from the accident and required daily medication, which put off many adopters. Our vets recommended removing one of his legs, too, as it had grown deformed after the accident.

“I grew fond of Jack while in our care and my partner and I discussed how we could help him further. We agreed to foster him after his surgery and when he was fully recovered we happily adopted him. Now he’s doing great and has adapted so well to his three-legged lifestyle.

“What made Jack a hard to home cat for some people made him impossible to resist for us.”

Since living with Amy, Jack developed kidney disease and is on a renal diet, but his last vet check showed that he is responding well to diet and medication.

Amy said: “Jack has brought us so much joy and hasn’t let anything hold him back. He is the friendliest, chirpiest and happiest cat we’ve ever met. He loves to cuddle up and purr on your lap all day. We can’t imagine our house without him.”

Cats Protection’s wall calendar shares the stories of cats successfully adopted through the UK’s largest feline charity’s network of adoption centres and volunteer-run branches.

Tom Ryan, Interim Head of Retail and Trading at Cats Protection said: “The arrival of our calendars and diaries are complementary highlights to the amazing goods, donated and new, we have in our shops.

“Our 2023 calendars will put a smile on faces up and down the country, illustrating the result of good work done by volunteers and staff at our branches, centres and shops and as a reminder that we do it all for cats. Every calendar, diary, box of Christmas cards or hidden treasure bought this season will help cats in need.”

The Cats Protection Cat Calendar (£5.99 + £4.95 p&p) is available online for UK delivery via https://www.catsprotectionshop.co.uk/ and from the charity’s chain of shops. Every calendar sold helps the charity to raise much-needed funds for cats and kittens in need of new homes.
