Eltham community and opticians achieve recycling success

ELTHAM opticians are celebrating recycling success, having collected and repurposed over 700 glasses and eyecare materials in only 6 weeks, with help from the community.
Partnering with recycling specialists MYgroup, Specsavers Eltham set up a collection point in-store 6 weeks ago for customers to drop off any unwanted specs and contact lens packaging.
The store revealed this milestone as part of the Great Big Green Week (8-16 June), the UK’s largest celebration of community efforts to combat climate change and protect nature.
This annual event highlights the inspiring actions taken by individuals and groups to protect the environment and Specsavers Eltham is excited to contribute by showcasing their and their customers’ recycling success.
Store director of Specsavers Eltham, Matthew Barkes, says: ‘We are committed to doing our part for the environment and want to thank everyone who has contributed by bringing in their eye care products for recycling.’
This achievement comes after Specsavers as a whole reached a remarkable milestone back in October 2023, donating the equivalent of 1 million pairs of glasses since August 2022 and underscoring the company’s dedication to sustainability.
Customers can donate metal and plastic glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses and accessories like blister packs, contact lens cases, and solution bottles. However, glasses cases and lens cloths are not accepted.
Once collected, these items are sent to MYgroup’s recycling facility, where they are transformed into various products, including furniture, home and garden accessories, benches, and play park equipment. The recycled materials can even be used in the construction industry as an alternative to plywood.
Notably, the recycled board produced by MYgroup can be continuously recycled, ensuring that items dropped off can be repurposed multiple times.
For those looking to contribute any unwanted glasses or eye care materials, Specsavers Eltham can be visited at 82-84 High Street, Eltham, Greater London, SE9 1BW. For more information, call 020 8850 8800.
