David Adekeye is attempting to run over 115 miles from his home in Enfield all the way to Birmingham to raise money for men’s health charity, Movember
On Saturday November 23, the 25-year-old will set off from London to run more than FOUR MARATHONS in the hope of reaching Enfield on Sunday November 24.
David explains: ‘I want to push myself and do something challenging that will hopefully spark conversations around men’s mental health and inspire men to talk more about their experiences. I decided to run alone and in the dark to symbolise the struggles many men face in silence and isolation’.
David will pass through 11 cities during his grueling challenge and hopes his epic endeavor will help raise money for charity as well as raising awareness of men’s health issues.
‘I chose to run to Birmingham, as the West Midlands region has historically experienced high rates of mental health conditions compared to the national average,’ he explains. ‘But the problem isn’t limited to these areas, it’s a UK-wide issue. Men are dying on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.
‘My ultra-marathon challenge is to shine a light on the need for greater mental health and cancer support for men in the UK and to help raise further awareness and resources to help those affected in the community. I know this challenge will test me both mentally and physically, especially since my longest run so far has been 10k! Running through the night in complete darkness will be tough, but I’m determined to reach the finish line.’
Movember is a month-long fundraising and awareness campaign starting November 1st.
This year marks 21 years of Movember raising awareness and funds for men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate and testicular cancers. For more information, go to www.movember.com
