GB News presenter and MP for Tatton Esther McVey has said she believes it will be “a matter of days” before executives at ITV resign.
Speaking on GB News, Ms McVey, a former GMTV host, compared the ongoing revelations to the now-defunct News of the World which was closed down after allegations of phone hacking.
“People could lose their jobs over this, from the Chief Executives right the way down,” McVey said. “So will we see heads rolling and will we see this show go?”
“I would say that it’s a matter of days now for the chief executive there and other people because they’re going to have to draw a line. They’re going to have to say this is definitive.”
Fellow presenter Philip Davis agreed with his wife and said he thought it was “difficult to see the chief executive of ITV seeing next week out.”
Meanwhile showbiz journalist Sarah Robertson told the GB News she believes there will be “more revelations to come in the next few days.”
“Now ITV are trying to distance themselves and saying that they didn’t know. But there are some very difficult questions for Dame Carolyn McCall in the days to come of just how much bosses really know?”
Robertson added: “People have said it might be time now for the whole show to be boycotted, taken off and then rebranded and brought back with an entirely new team of this.
“It’s now starting to look like a stink of maybe a cover up. This is what people are now questioning. Have people covered up these allegations? Why has it taken until now for Philip to leave?
“He originally had the backing of his ITV bosses: Kevin Lygo backed him when he stepped down. We saw that Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary this week when they took over the helm with Holly (Willoughby) off. I mean, they looked like they had a gun against their head when they had issued a statement to say Philip was such a fantastic broadcaster and one of the live broadcasts best live broadcasts Britain’s ever had.
“It’s all looking very, very murky now and this is just not going to go away. It’s a very damaging look for ITV. Questions are being asked. People want to know what is been going on and we can expect some high profile, maybe resignations or maybe more in the next few days.”
