The capital’s premier basketball team, London Lions, will take on European royalty, Žalgiris Kaunas, at the Copper Box on 17 September in its final friendly before the season gets underway.
London Lions vs Žalgiris Kaunas: Presented by Saily will tip-off at 19:30 and gives fans the chance to get a taste of elite European basketball in London and sees new head coach Tautvydas Sabonis take charge of his first home game.
Sabonis is one of the many links between the two clubs, joining from the Lithuanian side this summer having been an assistant coach there for the past few seasons.
Tickets start from £15, with discounted prices available for children, and will showcase a new look Lions outfit. Ahead of the 25.26 season, the club revealed a redesign of their brand, including a new logo, overhauled the squad with a number of exciting incomings, and will be playing at home in their new adidas kit for the first time.
Žalgiris Kaunas is the most successful Lithuanian side ever, winning the Lithuanian domestic league 24 times and EuroLeague on one occasion, in 1999. They have also broken EuroLeague attendance records several times in the last decade.
In 2024, the London Lions were acquired by Tesonet, a tech hub that also holds a stake in Žalgiris. Since then, the London club has been able to draw on Žalgiris’ extensive European experience as it continues its efforts to establish itself as a major force in European basketball.
Off the court, Tesonet’s ownership group are delivering operational sustainability practices to ensure the club can achieve its sporting goals.
Ahead of the curtain raiser against Žalgiris, the Lions will be involved in friendlies against two British sides, Sheffield Sharks and Surrey 89ers. The team will then embark on a training camp in Lithuania in early September, which will see them take on Juventus Utena and Neptunas Klaipeda to further prepare for the new season.
