TO MARK National Careers Week, 6th form students on the Hammersmith and Fulham campus met with a number of local businesses at their Careers Fair organised by the college’s careers advisors.

During the course of the morning, students posed a variety of questions to professionals from a diverse cross-section of businesses who work within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The students were keen to find out more about each of the professions, the subjects they might need to study, the qualifications required, training, work experience and career opportunities.

Supporting the Careers Fair was Aishwarya Kodumagulla, Specsavers Fulham’s marketing lead and optical assistant, who was accompanied by administration manager Preeti Macwan.

Aishwarya says: ‘We were delighted to support West London College’s Careers Fair and discuss various Specsavers career options with the students, who asked some really insightful questions.

‘The atmosphere was buzzing and really energising as there was a lot of interest in Specsavers as a brand, plus the job opportunities on offer too. We offered guidance and suggestions around the various roles, including apprenticeships which provide a blended learning approach with on-the-job training, to working in retail and running your own business. All in all, it was a great event to mark National Careers Week.’

With the vast choice of work and study options available to students, inviting local businesses and employers into the college so they can pose questions to them seems a great way to find out more first-hand from the professionals.

Specsavers as an organisation encourages its staff to further their qualifications and progress their careers within the group. The Specsavers Career Pathway offers staff the opportunity to study for industry-recognised qualifications which encompass a wide variety of roles, including customer services, optician, dispensing optician, optical assistant, audiologist, hearing assistant and laboratory technicians.

The apprenticeship programme has been rated as ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED, with Specsavers offering three apprenticeship schemes – optical assistant, spectacle maker and customer service. Specsavers is one of the largest apprenticeship employer providers to have achieved an outstanding grading in England.
