Christopher Wheeldon’s riotous reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s iconic novel returns to The Royal Ballet from 28 September – 1 November. This modern classic brings to life many beloved characters in a wildly imaginative, family-friendly show. This celebrated production is also live streamed to cinemas worldwide on Tuesday 15 October.
This revival features a host of Company debuts with Viola Pantuso, Ella Newton Severgnini, and Meaghan Grace Hinkis as Alice. William Bracewell, Cesar Corrales, Calvin Richardson and Marcelino Sambé make their debut as The Knave.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland burst onto the stage in 2011 in an explosion of colour, stage magic and inventive, sophisticated choreography. It was the first collaboration between Wheeldon, composer Joby Talbot, and designer Bob Crowley, who would later together create The Winter’s Tale and Like Water for Chocolate for The Royal Ballet.
Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary sound worlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative, eye-popping designs draw on everything from puppetry to projections to make Wonderland wonderfully real.
The result shows The Royal Ballet at its best, bringing together world-class dance with enchanting family entertainment and ingenious music and design.
The Royal Ballet’s production on the Main Stage is complimented by a very different retelling of the story running throughout September in the Linbury Theatre. ZooNation bring their energetic remix of Wonderland – The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party – back to the Royal Opera House for a limited run between 4 and 24 September
