In celebration of the 25th anniversary of World Book Day, Camden Lock, Stables, Hawley Wharf and Buck Street Market are coming together to hold a spectacular literary inspired event to capture the imagination of bookworms of all ages.
Held on the weekend of 5th- 6th March, the three destinations will offer a variety of activities, from readings by some of the nation’s most loved children’s authors, literary arts and crafts and a very special foodie experience where book lovers are invited to taste some of the most famous food and drinks from children’s literature.
So, what can people expect from this ‘novel’ World Book Day celebration?
Visitors can start their literary journey with a real-life flavour of their favourite children’s stories. Popular food establishments from across Camdens Markets, have created a special menu of limited-edition dishes straight out of the pages of children’s books. From Alice in Wonderland’s ‘Eat Me’ cookies to the BFG’s Frobscottle among the many amazing culinary creations, there are sweet treats, savoury snacks and delicious drinks to delight everyone.
As well as feeding your imagination, famous authors including Nicholas Allen and Konnie Huq will read from their best loved works on one of Camden’s iconic barges in Hawley Wharf to inspire young bookworms. These events are the perfect day out for any young book fan. The readings will be free of charge, but you will have to book tickets in advance via the Eventbrite page linked below.
From Home to London are also joining in the festivities to create Alice in Wonderland inspired pancakes and hosting a ‘Mad Hatter Tea Party’ brunch. Customisable fashion space, Koko Art will be opening their doors to create World Book Day inspired customised hats, t-shirts, shoes and more. In addition, kids and adults alike will be welcomed by butterfly winged stilt walkers, creating a giant version of the iconic character from the Hungry Caterpillar, alongside literary arts and crafts available such as making your own paper dolls like Julia Donaldson. Face painting, caricature drawing and even a Hansel and Gretel treasure trail make it the perfect day out for all the family.
So make sure you ‘book’ a day out in Camden and soak up the literary celebrations. Fancy dress of your favourite book character is of course encouraged.
