This week, step into a world of rivalry, genius and ambition at the all-new Blueprints of Power exhibition at Blenheim Palace, showcasing the bold and fascinating life of the designer of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sir John Vanbrugh (1664–1726).

Open to the public until 10th April, visitors can step into the Palace and experience an interactive exhibition shining a light on one of the greatest architects and theatrical figures of all time.

The exhibition spans Vanbrugh’s early life and theatrics as a playwright, all the way to his high-stakes partnership with Sarah Churchill, First Duchess of Marlborough. Each room in Britain’s Greatest Palace will pay homage to Sir John Vanbrugh and his legacy as an architect, playwright, soldier, spy, courtier, diplomat and garden designer.

During the experience, visitors will be welcomed into The Great Hall to meet the architect with plans, letters and models laid out to set the scene for the journey of discovery. In the China Anteroom, learn all about his architectural influences and in the Second State Room, the walls will come to life with animated talking portraits of Sarah Churchill and John Vanbrugh.

The Dining Room sets the scene of where the First Duke of Marlborough met Vanbrugh at secret London society meetings, and throughout Blueprints of Power, fans of The Favourite (2018) can see Sandy Powell’s original costumes.

The exhibition finale is in The Long Library, which will host a tailor-made light, sound and motion immersive projection experience, offering visitors the chance to literally step into a timeline from the past showcasing the different stages of building Blenheim Palace.

Blueprints of Power will feature an abundance of never-before-displayed items curated amongst Blenheim Palace’s own priceless collections, including:

Original workmen tools from early 1700s

Archival plans of Blenheim Palace from early 1700s

Sandy Powell’s original costumes from The Favourite (2018)

Visitors should also keep their eyes peeled for the opportunity to meet ‘John Vanbrugh’ for the ultimate photo opportunity, as a lookalike actor will be present as well as the chance to get involved in real time and vote for #teamjohnvanbrugh or #teamsarahchurchill.

Heather Carter, Managing Director – Visitor Attraction, Blenheim Palace, said: “It is an honour to celebrate the life and flamboyant character that was Sir John Vanbrugh. We have such a rich architectural history, and this new exhibition will be a fascinating showcase of his significant role in the design masterpiece of our Palace.
