Get ready to take flight this month, as the Natural History Museum is hosting a special one-off evening to celebrate the opening of its brand-new headline exhibition, Birds: Brilliant and Bizarre. From 6.30pm-9.30pm on Friday 31 May, Family Flight Night promises a captivating evening celebrating our fine feathered friends, featuring hands-on workshops, real-life animal encounters and much more.

Meet some of our pioneering 370 scientists as they take you on a tour of their remarkable research. Explore the art of conservation as our experts teach you how to look after some of the Museum’s most prized bird specimens. Speak to our mammal masters to learn all about bats, which make up 20% of all mammal species worldwide.

Join our space experts to hear about the recent revolutionary Bennu mission and what can be learned from the asteroid sample currently housed at the Museum. Or encounter the pterosaur, the first vertebrate to have evolved powered flight over 288 million years ago.

Alongside this spectacular science, museumgoers can get up-close and personal with snakes, giant snails and stick insects in a special ethical animal handling experience. Little ones can unleash their inner palaeontologist and uncover fossils of flying creatures. All this, alongside the Museum’s most popular galleries away from daytime crowds, including the Dinosaur Gallery and the recently reopened Mammals Gallery, and the brand-new headline exhibition, Birds: Brilliant and Bizarre.

Opening 24 May 2024 and created in affiliation with RSPB, Birds: Brilliant and Bizarre celebrates the history of our fascinating feathered friends as the ultimate survivor, tracking their evolution from the age of the dinosaurs to today. Embark on a thrilling odyssey, documenting the rise of birds from their dinosaur roots to present-day dangers, plus a look to the future of these ancient species, through captivating installations and hands-on exhibits. Advance tickets for the exhibition are available now.

Tickets to Family Flight Night includes entry to both Birds: Brilliant and Bizarre and the Museum’s second headline exhibition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, showcasing the weird and wonderful winning images from the world-renowned photography competition’s 59th year.
