FROM CHINATOWN TO CANARY WHARF: MAMA LI RESTAURANT DESIGN REVEALED

AWARD-WINNING interior architecture and design studio Macaulay Sinclair has unveiled its stylish and innovative concept for Cantonese restaurant brand Mama Li’s latest opening in Canary Wharf, London.

Moving beyond the boundaries of Chinatown, Mama Li aims to make authentic siu mei (Cantonese roast meats) accessible to Londoners across the city. Inspired by the personal touch and culinary legacy of the founder’s mother, this signature love and care have been expertly crafted into this new, third location in the capital.

Located in the next phase of the Wood Wharf mixed-use development, the space aims to be a blend of the first two venues and features a dual-concept model, offering both an informal grab ‘n’ go service and a dedicated, seated dining option. The compact interior seats 27 covers, complemented by 12 new outdoor seats – a fresh feature for the Mama Li brand.

Georgina Leigh, senior interior designer at Macaulay Sinclair, who led on the project said: “Our goal was to create a space that is first and foremost a tribute to Mama Li – the owner’s mother, who has over 20 years of experience in the Chinese catering industry and works primarily in the London Wall site. We wanted to celebrate this culinary legacy and build on that personal connection, while also solving the complex operational demands of a modern Canary Wharf site.

“There are references also to the “Cha Chaan Teng” (traditional Hong Kong-style café) and the nostalgic, comfort-driven look of traditional Asian eateries. From the bespoke, lantern-inspired timber lighting to the seamless zoning, the design elevates the grab-and-go experience into something truly memorable, making the art of siu mei the star.”

Guests are welcomed by the nostalgic frontage using custom-made, half shutters alongside neon-illuminated Chinese characters. A signature bespoke lighting feature inspired by traditional Chinese lanterns is also suspended in the window, featuring interlinking real oak pieces with opal light orbs in between, casting a welcoming, ombre glow.

Throughout the venue, the theme of motherhood and prosperity is subtly reinforced through traditional Chinese symbols, most notably the use of the Jade colour palette – a stone traditionally connected to longevity and maternal love. Intricate traditional patterned tiles imported directly from China, also anchor the design in authenticity, and elements like decorative teapots and vintage teacups have been integrated into the artwork. The use of architectural curves is also a reference to better flow, continuity and good fortune in Chinese culture.

A bespoke screen divider and unique colour palettes highlight the different areas of the restaurant; the dining area is a retreat featuring a moodier light scheme and a richer application of the Jade green colour, while the grab-and-go section features a striking pink and grey mosaic flooring and wall-mounted kiosks for efficient ordering and pick-up.

A standout element is the custom-built bar and waiter station; a complex joinery piece that also incorporates a glass gantry and a heat pass to perfectly blend aesthetics with operational demands. Placing food at the centre of the experience, a meat window allows diners to view the preparation and carving of specialty meats, transforming a functional necessity into an interactive feature.

A dedicated delivery hatch reminiscent of traditional shop windows is visible from outside for delivery drivers, helping to maintain a seamless flow and atmosphere inside, a major improvement for peak service times.

Catherine Hua, owner and director of Mama Li, said: “We wanted this new space to feel like coming home, while still offering the speed and convenience our modern customers expect. The entire design is an homage to the warm, communal spirit our mum brought to our family’s dining table, and what I’m sure many people of all cultures can relate to.

“This is not just a restaurant but the evolution of our brand and a deep reflection of our roots. We are excited to welcome the community to experience this unique blend of heritage, convenience and immersive design.”

Mama Li Canary Wharf opens on 11 February and is located at 3 West Lane, Wood Wharf, E2
