If you managed to get a round in for the few days that golf courses were open at the start of the year, you’re certainly one of the lucky ones, but players can begin to dust off their clubs once again with courses set to reopen soon.
Golf is one of the first sports to open back up to the public, with courses and driving ranges in England set to welcome patrons back from March 29.
For golfers in Scotland and Ireland, the wait is likely to go on a little longer, although players in Wales are already enjoying life back on the fairways.
There are a few things to think about before you grab your bag and head out, though…
What are the restrictions?
Rounds are only to be pre-booked with a club beforehand, and the government’s advice to stay local should still be kept in mind.
Playing groups are limited to a maximum of four, although it can be made up from people outside of your household – provided you maintain social distance. Balls, clubs and other equipment should not be shared.
Note that pro shops and other retail outlets will remain closed, so if your short game isn’t up to scratch and you need a new set of irons, you may have to bide your time.
England Golf has put together a full list of restrictions and reminders.
What about other sports?
Many outdoor sports will resume at the same time as golf, with tennis and basketball courts set to be reopened and football, rugby and cricket activities also set to begin again on the same date.
It is different for indoor sports, however, including practice sessions for outdoor sports – for example, indoor golf centres.
These venues, and others such as gyms and swimming pools will reopen on April 12 if the Government’s ‘tests’ for easing restrictions are passed.
Are more people taking up golf?
If you’re keen to get back out on the course as soon as restrictions are lifted, it’s possible that you may find competition for bookings a bit fiercer than previously.
Owing to its outside presence and natural fit with social distancing, golf has soared in popularity over the past year as many have found other hobbies and pastimes blocked off by the different restrictions placed on society.
As other sports became difficult to play, golf courses reported a rise of more than 50% in rounds played over the summer months of 2020 compared to the previous year.
There may well be many Christmas presents yet to have taken to the tee, fairway or green, so if you are looking to get back out there once restrictions are eased, it may well be worth finding a booking as soon as possible!
