The Royal Borough of Greenwich is reviewing the way it allocates council homes and homes managed by our Housing Association partners in the borough.
In a borough-wide consultation launched on Friday 21 July, residents, tenants and leaseholders, local businesses and community groups are invited to share their views on how the Council’s allocations scheme works, and what more it could be doing to address the housing crisis.
Councillor Pat Slattery, Cabinet Member for Housing, Neighbourhoods and Homelessness said: “This is another opportunity for our residents to help shape Royal Greenwich’s housing policies.
“While there are no easy fixes to the issues we face locally in terms of housing, we are committed to making sure that our homes go to the people who need them the most and that we provide the best advice and help we can to those who can’t help through our housing allocations scheme. That’s why we need people’s feedback on what we could do differently.”
The Council is facing an unprecedented demand on its housing services. As of May 2023, approximately 27,000 households are on the housing register waiting for a council home, with only about 1,000 homes becoming available for rent each year. The highest number of people waiting for a home fall into the Band C category, but fewer than 20 households from Band C have been rehoused in recent years.
Despite a 1,750 council house building programme called Greenwich Builds, the demand for homes in Royal Greenwich far outstrips supply.
The public consultation will run for 12 weeks until Friday 13 October 2023.
