Helping the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London see well in National Eye Health Week

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of the City of London, Alderman Michael Mainelli and his wife Elisabeth, are fervent supporters of scientific advance and using technology to improve and enhance lives.

During National Eye Health Week 2024 (23 – 29 September), they demonstrated in person the importance of eye health by receiving spectacles provided for them as a gift of the craft by The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.

The Company is the only City of London livery company entirely dedicated to eye health. One of its long standing members is optometrist Hayley Wainer, of Hawkes and Wainer.

With over a century of experience, Hawkes & Wainer have been providing specialist eye care in the City of London since 1919. The practice has grown to become a leading provider of premium eyewear and vision care services, continuing their legacy as a family-run independent practice.

Hayley and her father Ivan have been proud to provide eye health services to many Lord Mayors, Sheriffs, Aldermen and Alderwomen during that time.
The glasses were presented at Mansion House, home and office of the Lord Mayor, following a thorough eye examination by the team at Hawkes & Wainer, using advanced optical technology alongside their clinical expertise.

Hayley Wainer, Senior Optometrist at Hawkes & Wainer, said: “It is an immense honour for us to serve the Lord Mayor of London and the Lady Mayoress and the people of the City of London.

“We are dedicated to providing exceptional eyecare, and proud to be able to harness together our clinical skills and training with the technology now available. This enables us to understand and track changes in the eye in so much detail.

“I hope that the support of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for National Eye Health Week will encourage more people to have a regular eye examination and get the very best from their eyes throughout their lives.”
