HOME Secretary Suella Braverman issued a “veiled threat” to resign in relation to the handling of the deal with the EU, according to former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage.

He made the comment during a discussion with Liam Halligan about his exclusive interview with Ms Braverman which was broadcast on GB News tonight.

In it she said: “I don’t support selling out on Northern Ireland and allowing the EU a foothold in the United Kingdom.”

Ms Braverman’s comments come amid speculation that ministers are prepared to resign if a new deal with the EU on the Northern Ireland customs protocol involves oversight by the European Court of Justice.

Mr Farage said: “Well, I have to say that’s quite a veiled threat.

“‘I have resigned in the past on deals that I have found to be unacceptable’, and she was referring directly back to that post Chequers period.

“I’m guessing that the Sunak calculation is that the Eurosceptics on the backbenches have been reduced to a rump.

“I think his calculation would be that nobody in Cabinet will actually resign over this.”

He added: “Sunak, it appears to me, is trying to negotiate something that makes trade easier between the mainland and Northern Ireland, hence this concept of a green lane that goods can go through.

“But really what she’s saying, I think, is the heart of this is a constitutional issue.”

On the Channel small boats crisis, Mr Farage said: “She wants to stop this from happening, as indeed did Priti Patel.

“I think she’s got a very important future role to play, certainly within the Conservative Party.

“I still think there’s a possibility, a possibility that by 2026 there is a re-alignment of the centre right in British politics and if there is I think she could be just about the most important player in it.”
