Hospice appeals for budding photographers to send in their best local snaps for patient’s rooms

The charity is asking community members with a keen eye to send in photos they have taken of local landmarks, people or nature for patient’s rooms to make them feel welcoming and restful.

The appeal is open for anyone from Bromley, Croydon, Lewisham, Lambeth or Southwark and closes at 5pm on Tuesday 24 June.

The photos should be taken in the local community, with the themes exploring nature, places and people. The person submitting the photo must own the copyright to the image, and must obtain consent from anyone shown in the photos.

A selection of the photos will be hung in patients’ rooms, so they should inspire feelings of calm and restfulness to people staying at the hospice.

A panel made up of patients, volunteers and staff at St Christopher’s will look at all the entries, and choose those to be installed.

The appeal is part of a wider refurbishment of the hospice’s wards which started earlier this year and is due to finish in early 2026.

St Christopher’s wards haven’t seen significant upgrade in more than a decade and so the refurbishment is about improving the look and feel of the spaces, so they are more welcoming for the people staying with us.

The majority of people St Christopher’s supports are living in their own homes and in the community. However, there are people with complex needs who want and need to stay at the hospice and so these upgrades will be managed so as many beds as possible are available to ensure a continuity of in-patient care for our community.

Julie O’Neil, Ward Manager at St Christopher’s, says: “St Christopher’s is all about community and so we thought it was only right to involve South Londoners with our ward upgrades.
“We want our rooms to feel almost like a home away from home and a place for the whole family to spend time and warm, eye-catching photos of local landmarks can help to create that atmosphere.”
