Supermarket Iceland is spreading the love this Mother’s Day by repurposing billboards to spotlight touching home-made tributes made by kids for their hard-working mums.

The UK’s leading frozen food retailer picked out top entries from hundreds of emotional drawings shared on social media. The first to be unveiled was from Teddy Derrick (5), from Surrey, who surprised his Mum Jema with a heart-warming creation depicting her as a mighty superhero in a mask and red cape. Teddy features in the card as a cute sidekick.

Hairdresser Jema was stunned to spot the 20-foot card, only a few streets away from their home. The billboard reads “I love you so much and you are the greatest superhero mummy ever.”

Jema teared up as she saw her little boy’s artwork featured on a local street billboard in Morden, Surrey. “I’m not used to being the centre of attention. I’m so touched that Teddy and Iceland have done this for me. My fridge is covered in his paintings but to see this one supersized on the street is surreal but truly special.”

The beauty professional admitted lockdown was particularly tough and thanked her son for seeing her as a hero.

Sebastien Mills (aged 6) from Hackney wanted to surprise his mum Mimi who’s had a tough time working from home during the pandemic. He wrote on the card “You’re the bestest mum in the whole wide world. I love you loads.”

Civil servant Mimi had her hands full juggling her job and her young boy who dreamed of once again going on an adventure. His entry showed him departing a train to explore an exciting new place. Sebastien added flowers, rainbows and hearts to the artwork because he wanted the picture to “make mum smile from ear to ear”.

Sebastien’s message, is displayed in East London. His mother happened across it on the way to her local Iceland in Stoke Newington.

Iceland has a long legacy of being the supermarket to support mums, owing to its most famous catchphrase: ‘That’s why mums go to Iceland’.

A spokesperson for Iceland says: “Iceland has always championed the nation’s mums so we wanted to give a special shout out this year to some of the incredible mums across the UK who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic – home schooling, juggling work Zoom calls and putting food on the table.”

As well as pinning beautiful Mother’s Day artwork to the fridge, Iceland suggests filling it with mouth-watering goodies. The Food retailer has a wide range of products to spoil the nation’s mums with, from breakfast in bed, to sweet treats and chocolates, starting from just £1.

Those planning a special lunch at home can pick up Iceland’s Mother’s Day Roast Meal deal including a choice of a 1 x meat 1 x veg and 2 x sides for only £8.
