An Islington community centre can repair its leaky storage shed after winning £1,000 worth of DIY materials.

Caxton House, on St John’s Way, bagged the prize from leading decorating and DIY specialists Leyland SDM through the Give London a Lift campaign.

Each month, Leyland SDM is presenting two good causes with £1,000 credit to spend at one of its 30 stores across the capital.

Caxton House is a busy community centre hosting a huge array of activities for people of all ages and interests, from Zumba to IT classes.

Volunteers are currently revamping the garden area and will use the Give London a Lift windfall to repair a troublesome leaking roof.

Sue Collins, Finance & Office Manager at Caxton House, said: “It’s amazing to receive this prize from Leyland SDM.

“Our volunteers are really working hard to improve the garden area. Lots of fresh vegetables are being grown and the ultimate aim is to use that produce in our kitchen.

“The roof on our storage shed is leaking and needs to be repaired so we can keep our tools in there. This money will allow us to do that.

“Funds are always tight at a community centre so prizes like this really do make a huge difference.”

Caxton House will be visiting Leyland SDM’s store in Hackney, on Balls Pond Road, to make its purchases.

Leyland SDM has 10 prizes of £1,000 in-store credit to be won through Give London a Lift – which is being backed by former England and Arsenal footballer Paul Merson – until October.

Paul Gerreli, marketing director at Leyland SDM, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support Caxton House Community Centre through Give London a Lift.

“The centre is a real hub for the community with a huge number of activities taking place each week.

“We look forward to welcoming Sue and the team to our Hackney store so we can make sure they have everything they need to replace this leaking roof. Hopefully there will be some money left over for further improvements, too.

“Give London a Lift is open to entries until the end of October so I’d urge more groups to apply to see if we can help.”

Organisations can apply online each month, detailing why they believe they would by worthy recipients of the £1,000, and winners will be chosen by a team of judges.

The money can be spent on anything from paint to tools and electrical wiring to plumbing parts.

Applications can be made on the Leyland SDM website www.leylandsdm.co.uk/givelondonalift

Leyland SDM has become one of the most recognisable and trusted decorating and DIY retail brands in central London with stores in some of the capital’s most prominent locations.
