Delancey Real Estate founder Jamie Ritblat has a 30-year track record in the UK property sector. This article will look at the work of Heritage of London Trust, an organisation Jamie Ritblat currently serves as trustee. In addition, Delancey Real Estate is the proud sponsor of several Heritage of London Trust initiatives, having recently financed the charity’s Proud Places conference.

To date, Heritage of London Trust has saved more than 750 landmark monuments and buildings, with its projects bringing together members of the local community, particularly young people, through the Proud Places programme. Delancey became a major sponsor of Heritage of London Trust in 2017, funding the organisation’s restoration projects across the city of London.

Major projects embarked upon by the Heritage of London Trust include:

Restoring the clock faces of Bow Church in 2017.
Returning a historic bell to Galleywall School, Bermondsey, in March 2022. To mark the bell’s return, a team from the charity’s Proud Places programme led small workshops and school assemblies, sharing the history and traditions of the local area with students.
Returning an 8-foot tall gilt dragon weathervane to the top of St James’s Church in Bermondsey in 2022, and in doing so, preserving an iconic element of the Bermondsey skyline. In addition, the church’s drinking fountain was also returned to working order, and its clock faces were also restored. Local primary school students participated in creative workshops, drawing the dragon while it was on the ground, prior to its return to the top of the tower.

Dr Nicola Stacey, Director of Heritage of London Trust, expressed the organisation’s gratitude to Delancey Real Estate for the company’s continued support, adding that it was fantastic that the company is investing in the city in this way. Dr Stacey said how exciting the Heritage of London Trust’s work with local communities was, indicating that Delancey Real Estate’s support helps the charity to deliver that work.

In April 2023, it was announced that Delancey Real Estate would support the Heritage of London Trust’s Proud Places conference. This year’s edition welcomed more than 130 delegates to the event, which was staged at the Society of Antiquaries in Piccadilly, London, next to the Royal Academy.

Heritage of London Trust’s Proud Places programme is a pioneering youth engagement initiative designed to support young people from across London, particularly those who come from challenging backgrounds, providing them with a chance to participate in the restoration of local heritage. Proud Places: Reconnecting Young Lives was open to the public, providing a venue for young people to showcase their work through a series of presentations and exhibitions. Talks were given by several inspirational speakers, including Lord John Bird and Lib Peck. In addition, there were readings of poetry, stonemasonry demonstrations and more.

Attended by more than 130 people, including representatives from various boroughs of London, the conference made a big impact on the audience, with 80% of attendees reporting that the event had changed their perception of youth engagement work.

Christina Rehnberg is ESG director for Delancey Real Estate. She chaired the final afternoon session at the conference, during which delegates heard from the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law’s Ola Ogwu. Students from Swanlea School also gave a talk about active citizenship during the session. In addition, Arnaud William Mbaki read his poetry, which explores the histories of various Heritage of London Trust projects.

Delancey Real Estate chairman and founder Jamie Ritblat said that his company was blown away by the quality of young people’s exhibitions and presentations, adding that it was inspiring to see their passion for the arts and heritage sector. Mr Ritblat expressed his gratitude at having been able to play a small role in the great work undertaken by the charity, explaining that Delancey Real Estate had been partnering with the Heritage of London Trust since 2017. Mr Ritblat said that Delancey Real Estate looked forward to continuing to support the trust and its incredible efforts across the city.

Heritage of London Trust’s Proud Places programme welcomes young people aged 11 and older, inspiring participants through heritage projects. The programme helps children to learn the hidden histories of London, encouraging them to take an active interest in the buildings around them. The programme was created to help young people to take control of their life choices, learning new skills through creative workshops and exploring London behind-the-scenes to develop local knowledge and pride in their community.

Heritage of London Trust was established in 1980. The organisation was created by the Greater London Council with the aim of rescuing historic monuments and buildings across the city of London. Today, Heritage of London Trust is active in all London boroughs, supporting local communities most in need of help.
