On Tuesday, September 16th, Katie Piper OBE visited Addison Primary School in Hammersmith to deliver an important message of kindness to pupils. To support the launch of the NSPCC’s Kindness Challenge, Katie delivered an assembly about the importance of showing compassion to others and yourself, followed by a Q&A session with Year 5 and 6 pupils.
The Kindness Challenge sees schools and nurseries across the country spreading kindness in their school communities. Pupils choose up to nine kind acts using an NSPCC worksheet and complete these acts during the first week of October.
As part of her visit, Katie gave a reading of her new book, “Your Greatest Gift” to a Year One class. The book serves as a reminder that generosity and kindness are the most valuable gifts someone can give.
Katie Piper OBE said: “I’ was absolutely thrilled to visit Addison Primary School in Hammersmith for the NSPCC’s Kindness Challenge. It was wonderful to see how engaged children became when we talked about the topic of kindness.
“Having just launched ‘Your Greatest Gift’, as part of my Teeny Mouse Adventure book series, I know first-hand how much children love stories that celebrate behaviours such as generosity and patience.
“The NSPCC’s Kindness Challenge gives schools such a brilliant opportunity to make these values come alive in the classroom and playground, while raising vital funds for Childline’s incredible work.”
Katie Fudge, Fundraising Manager, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at Addison Primary School and Katie for taking part in the NSPCC’s Kindness Challenge.
“It’s not too late for schools to sign up! To find out more, visit the NSPCC website or search ‘NSPCC Kindness Challenge’ online.”
To spread the message of kindness, Katie Piper has shared her top five kindness tips:
1. Look after yourself first: You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure you take care of your own wellbeing too
2. Think before you speak: Consider the impact of your words before saying them
3. Check in with others: Be there to support people in your life and be a good listener
4. Practice everyday kindness: Kindness is about being caring, helpful and considerate of others. It’s about doing things to make people feel good, even when it isn’t easy. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the world
5. Know where to find support – Remind people that Childline is there if they need help
Starting on 6th October, the Kindness Challenge is a week dedicated to spreading kindness in school communities while raising vital funds for Childline. You can sign up to the challenge here: Kindness Challenge.
The Kindness Challenge is supported by YPO and the organisation will be taking their NSPCC branded delivery van and visiting schools with a pick and mix of stationery products as their act of kindness. They will be visiting Bradford, Bolton and Liverpool.
